what happen to the sounds?

there used to be sound when a game starts. is it my imagination, or did it go away?

i play 960 mostly, and there aren't that many players, so while waiting for takers, i oftentimes browse other pages. but lately, i miss a lot of games because i don't hear the ping when a game is about to start...
I noticed that happening too. It doesn't usually bother me because I can still (just) hear the notification when I'm navigating other tabs.
If you have a look at this web page http://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/200swd/, it suggests the reason may be because the 'search by voice' has been activated. So when you open another web page, the computer expects you might try to give it a voice command to google and so reduces the output of the spekers, presumably to help prevent feedback.
This website, http://www.askvg.com/fix-windows-7-automatically-reduces-system-volume-for-games-pc-calls/, suggests the following fix :-

1. Open "Sound" applet from Control Panel. You can also access it directly using "mmsys.cpl" command in RUN or Start Menu searchbox. Or right-click on Speaker icon present in system tray and select "Playback devices" or "Recording devices" or "Sounds" option.

2. Now go to "Communications" tab and check the option "Do nothing" and Apply it.

You can't access the 'communications' tab from the speaker icon in the system tray, so it's important you do it as suggested above.
Cotton buds might work too. though
Or.....turn off "OK Google"

Open Google Chrome.
In the top right corner, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu > Settings.
In the "Search" section, check Enable "Ok Google" to start a voice search. To turn Ok Google off, uncheck this box.
If you're on a Chromebook, you may be asked to turn on the Voice & Audio Activity setting.
Under Enable "Ok Google" to start a voice search, you'll see where you can use "Ok Google." In Chrome, it's usually on google.com or a new tab. On some Chromebooks, you can say "Ok Google" from any page if your screen is on and unlocked.
thanks. i'm on a mac using safari. when i'm browsing or in another tab, the sound is inaudible now, but otherwise it's fine?

i don't know, maybe it's my imagination...
OK Google isn't a feature in safari, it's only available on Chrome.
Are you navigating in other tabs when this happens mouse? If so, have you tried #4 ?
