Takeback etiquette?

So I am not generally accustomed to this whole takeback thing.

What is the proper etiquette?

I used to always accept because, what's the fun in playing a handicapped game? But then I realised it limited my opportunity to play against better rated opponents. So now I'm not accepting takebacks anymore, even if they are obviously dumb mistakes.

In real life you are not allowed to takeback so you are supposed to keep the piece firmly within your fingers for as long as it takes you to be sure that the move is the correct one.
i accept sometimes when it was an obvious mouseslip but not because of etiquette :)

i see no problem in not allowing takebacks. Would never expect an opponent to accept them.

Search the forums and the Questions&Answers part: there have been quite some answers to that already.
If you never accept takebacks simply disable them in your preferences and noone can ask you for some
In a rated game either is acceptable. It's really down to the person. If someone makes a blunder and wants a take back then accepting or declining the take back are both fine. If someone is rude because you didn't let them take back, then that is only a sign of their bad etiquette.

In a casual game I still think either is acceptable. Usually if the game is good then I will let them take back a blunder, to allow the good match to continue. If I'm bored of the game or need to go then perhaps I won't accept the take back.

I think there is an ultimate rule and that is to never feel obliged to let an opponent take back if you don't want to. If they complain about it then they are displaying bad etiquette.

Don't feel bad about asking for a take back, but don't expect the opponent to accept it. If the opponent declines a few take backs then perhaps it's time to not ask for any more and let the opponent decide in future if they want to offer you one.
#4, I second that, not accepting is not a bad etiquette, but expecting, insisting and harassing is.
