Why I prefer lichess to chess.com
1. It's faster and more functional. And I love the feature to see all games at once in little squares. Chess.com is more colorful and maybe looks better at times but functionality and speed comes first. I just hate when you have to wait for the page to load.
2. How tournaments are set up. I love that you don't have to wait for all games to finish when you have won (or lost) a game really fast. It's great that you can play the first player available. I don't know how many times on chess.com where I had to wait for the next game, I started doing other stuff and returned back too late, so I both lost next game AND got kicked out of the whole tournament. Here you always get a second chance and you can even join in the middle of the tournament. Or leave and join again as you please.
However with this system it comes another way of thinking. Some players get to play more games than others, and also sometimes it might be best to take "tactical losses" in order to win the tournament. It may be better to resign right away than waste 10 minutes of your time with a hard fought game against a 2000+ player (if you end up loosing anyway). During those 10 minutes you may beat 2 low ranked player in Berzerk mode. So it might be more tactical thinking than just chess.
3. The chess variants. I had never played Horde before. loved it. I also seldom found opponents to play 960 chess. I wish more variants will come up.
4. I love that you don't have a wall here. On chess.com the only messages you receive on your wall is abuse from sore loosers. 2 our of 10 messages are nice ones. And the administrators won't do anything about it.
5. It's free. All these comparisions are of the paid account of chess.com and still lichess is better in most cases.
6. Where chess.com might be superior are the training features. I love their "chess mentor" feature, and where you can get to play old champs games to see if you can see what they saw and repeat their moves.
I don't know what else might better on chess.com but I'm huge fan of this site so far.
I like both sites but prefer this one.
I also played at gamecolony but had to quit there because they constantly complained about the java update.
What experiences do you have of other pages? And what have I missed?
