PGN Piece notation ?

The new settings contains a setting called "PGN Piece notation" where you can chose "Chess Piece Symbol" or "PGN letter (K,Q,R,B,N). As I've understand PGN is a file format that always uses the (K,Q,R,B,N) that actually is called "algebraic notation" (FIDE). Why is it possible to chose something else?
I think it's for when you download a PDF. It doesn't actually change it in the PGN file.
If you choose "Chess Piece Symbol", K/Q/R/B/N in the move list next to a game will be displayed by a sort of icon (e.g. a rook icon for R). If you choose "PGN letter" you see the actual letters.
