i guess coders are too good at chess to need to think and find a way to escape.

Honestly, I think from the sitter's point of view, the message is too easily triggered for two reasons:
1. The sitter might be ahead on time because their opponent has been moving slower the entire game. Why not let the faster player think?
2. For a 3+0 game the threshold is 180 / 12 = 15 seconds. I've spent more time than that in many difficult endgame positions, even in blitz (although I tend to play 3+2).
